Laguna Beach at Newport (October 6,2009)

The Newport Harbor High school surf team opened its season Tuesday morning at 56 th street with a resounding 98 - 70 victory over Laguna Beach. The waves were perfect with continual head high sets as the Sailors won six of the eight heats with 5 first, 7 second and 3 third place finishes.

The Boy’s short board squad lost 4 key starters to graduation but this year’s squad consisting of five seniors, one junior, four sophomores and three freshmen were up for the challenge. Lead by first place finisher’s sophomore Charlie Hawthorne, freshman Colin Moran, and seniors Jared Cassidy and Erik Heimstaedt, the team won each of the four heats and a combined score of 56-28. Heimstaedt closed out the last heat with the contest high scores and a wave average of 8.1. Placing second were Sophomores Charlie Johnson and Blake Davis and seniors Canon Call and Bobby Okvist. Taking third place was sophomore Fritz Howser.

The girl’s short board team was lead to a 12-9 victory by second place finisher sophomore Shelby Detmers and third place finisher senior Kaleigh Gilchrist. Taylor Pitz of Laguna Beach placed first.

The body board squad won its heat 12 – 9 led by freshman Briggs Viloria. Placing third was junior Joe Suzuki.

The boy’s long board squad lost a close competition 11-10 as senior Austin Gilbert placed second for the Sailors. .

The girl’s long board squad lost 13-8 as senior Elizabeth Eddy placed second. Pitz of Laguna Beach placed first.

The next meet is on October 20th at 56 th Street against powerhouse San Clemente.
