Newport at Hand Hills (March 2,2010)

After a season plagued by rain and fowled beach water the Newport surf team was back in the water. The Sailors team surfed its sixth meet Tuesday morning at Salt Creek against arch rival Dana Hills. Led by a perfect score from Kaleigh Gilchrist and a very strong short board team the Sailors defeated the Dana Hills team 80-67. This would be the first of a home and away competition with the always strong Dana Hills team. With the victory Newport improved its season record to 4-2

 

The Boy’s short board squad improved its record to 5-1 as they walloped San Clemente with a near perfect 54-30 score. The Sailors won nine of the top twelve positions in the four heats Taking first place were Canon Call, Colin Moran and Jared Cassidy. Cassidy had the meet high average wave score of 7.75. Placing second were Fritz Howser, Max Colvin, Daniel Netzer, and Jesse Johnson. Zach Porteous and Casey Bushong placed third.

 

The girl’s short board squad won 13-8 and was led by first place finisher Kaleigh Gilchrist who scored a meet high perfect 10 by all three judges on one of her two scoring waves. Teammate Shelby Detmers placed second for the winning girl’s squad.

 

Aaron Cervantes placed third for the long board squad.

 

Newport’s next contest is Thursday March 4 at 56 th Street against Dana Hills.
