San Clemente at Newport (October 20,2009)

The Newport Harbor High school surf team surfed its second meet Tuesday morning at 56 th street against arch rival San Clemente. Led by a very strong short board team the Sailors dominated the San Clemente team with a 94-74 victory. This would be the first of a home and away competition with the always strong San Clemente team. Newport stands atop the league with a 2-0 record

The Boy’s short board squad remained undefeated for the year as they walloped San Clemente with a near perfect 54-30 score. The Sailors took first and second position in all four heats. Taking first place were Canon Call, Fritz Howser, Blake Davis and Jared Cassidy. Placing second were Charlie Hawthorne, Erik Heimstaedt, Colin Moran and Jesse Johnson. Max Colvin placed third.

Each of the four special team squads lost narrowly by a score of 11-10.

The girl’s short board squad was led by first place finisher Kaleigh Gilchrist who scored a meet high average wave score of 6.6.

Elizabeth Eddy placed second in the girl’s long board and third in the girls short board competitions.

Aaron Cervantes also scored a 6.6 as he placed first in the long board and Yuji Kanbayashi placed second and Briggs Viloria took third in the body board.
