A new definition for the word perfect was found at 56 th street in Newport over the past weekend when the Newport Harbor High school held their annual surf team fundraiser – the 6 th annual Newport Classic.
The record number of contestants (145) was treated to 2-4 surf on Saturday and 4-6 foot waves with occasional 7 footers on Sunday. While Saturday had some brief fog delays, Sunday was a 10.0 day with sunny skies and sailboats in the background. It was a classic California day.
Saturday's contests saw 22 prelim heats run among the middle school, high school and men's open divisions. The 96 contestants cut up the perfect surf as Reed Zachman (CDM) cranked an 8.3 average wave score in one of the middle schools heats. Joey Head and Geoff Moysa lead the way for the High school and Men's open divisions with scores of 6.8 and 7.9. By the end of the first day 30 surfers had advanced into semifinal rounds in these three divisions.
Sunday's contests ran 22 more heats representing all seven divisions-men's, high school, middle school, elementary school, women's, long board, and body board..
The men's open division heats included two semi final heats. A perfect score of 10 was registered by Geoff Moysa in one of the two semis. The finals were a close contest with Nate Tyler taking first, Josh Hoyer second and Moyer taking third place.
The highs school division saw NHHS star Joey head take first place as Joe Mungo took second and Christian Morabito placed third.
The middle school division was won by Cameron Clark (Ensign) as Ford Archbold took second and Reed Zachman took third.
Matt Armstrong, NHHS alum and surf team assistant coach took first place in the long board division. NHHS surfers Jared Mell and Chase Smith placed second and third respectively.
The women's division was won by Edison high star Carly Myers. Kaleigh Gilchrist (Ensign) and Lisa Turk (NHHS) placed second and third.
The body board contest was loaded with NHHS stars. First place was won by Harry Tully. Matt Kretschmar and Stevie Farmer took second and third places.
The elementary school division was won by grommet Blake Davis with an average wave score of 6.9. Placing second and third respectively were Avery Sieg and Sophia Evans.
A special expression session (air show) was won by Josh Hoyer with a score of 7.5.
The event would not have been possible without the exceptional support from local surf shop – Surfside Sports and the other co-sponsors – Quicksilver, Roxy, Smith Optical, Vestal and Gallos of Balboa..
The two day event was made more spectacular by the numerous raffles held concurrent with the contests. Numerous local businesses contributed to the raffles. All of these donors can be seen as well as specific heat results at www.nhhssurf.com .
The vent concluded with an awards ceremony where the top six finishers in each division won prizes, donated from the co-sponsors and local business.
Hundreds of people (parents and friends) enjoyed a perfect weekend at the beach.
